Respite from frequent agitations, bandhs in State
SHILLONG: After four months of continuous violence including arsons, night road blockades and bandh, Shillong city is finally limping back to normalcy much to the satisfaction of common men.
The much awaited normalcy was missing in the capital city since September last year when the talks between the pressure groups and Government over the issue of Inner Line Permit (ILP) failed miserably.
The return of normalcy has brought a sigh of relief to the poor class of the people who are daily wage earners since there are no more agitations in the capital.
It may be mentioned that the four-month-long standoff between the State Government and the pro-ILP pressure groups over the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya came to an end on January 16 when the pressure groups decided to suspend their agitations.
In the last four months, the State including Shillong has undergone serious law and order problems with many cases of arson and stone pelting getting reported which led to the loss of three lives.
However, the city police is on guard to avoid the repetition of violence in the city.
Superintendent of Police (City) Vivek Syiem on Sunday said that the police is still not taking any chances and are trying its best to maintain the law and order of the city.
“We are still intensifying our security especially in the run up the republic day celebrations,” Syiem said while adding that frisking and checking is being conducted in different parts of the city. The worst to suffer during the post violence period were the poor people from rural areas as they were forced to leave Shillong and reach their villages early due to the agitations but this is not the case as vehicles are seen plying in the city normally till late night.
