Assamese poet Rabindra Sarkar gets Sahitya Akademi award

New Delhi: Assamese poet Rabindra Sarkar has been conferred the Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 2013 for “Dhuliyori Bharir Sans” his book of poems, an official statement said on Tuesday. Sarkar’s book was selected on the basis of recommendations by a three-member jury comprising Srun Sarma, Hrishikesh Goswami and Malinee Goswami in the Asssamese language.

Those selected for the Sahitya Akademi awards for the 2013 was announced at a press conference in December last year.

“This year awards for the Assamese and Gujarati categories were not announced due to some unavoidable reasons,” K. Sreenivasarao, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi had told reporters then. Previously the Gujarati poet Chinu Modi was conferred the Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 2013 for his poetry book “Khara Zaran”. Some of the other winners of the award announced in December, 2013 to include Bollywood lyricist-scriptwriter Javed Akhtar, Hindi novelist Mridula Garg and renowned Bengali poet Subodh Sarkar. The Sahitya Akademi Award winners in 23 languages would be honoured in March during the Festival of Letters being organised here by the Sahitya Akademi. The award comprises an engraved copper plaque, a shawl and a cheque for Rs 100,000. (PTI)
