Bandh against non-local killings marred by violence

Guwahati: Violence marred a bandh called by a non-Bodo body in Kokrajhar district of western Assam to protest the attacks on non-locals by militants.
The bandh was called by the Bengali Yuba Chatra Federation.
Stray incidents of attacks on shops which were open and torching of vehicles were reported from the district.
Police also resorted to batoning to disperse a group of bandh supporters near Kokrajhar police station.
Meanwhile, neighbouring Udalguri district administration has imposed prohibitory orders apprehending militant attacks in the district.
The orders under Section 144 of the CrPC would be in force till January 26, an official statement said. Representatives of the unified command structure in the district had met on Tuesday under the chairmanship of the deputy commissioner to review the security scenario.
Assam DGP Khagen Sarma had yesterday held a meeting at the Chirang SP office at Kajalgaon with top officials of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Army and superintendents of police of five districts – Bongaigaon, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Dhubri and Goalpara to discuss measures to be taken against the militant groups active in the five western Assam districts.
KNLA chief arrested
Self-styled c-in-c of Karbi National Liberation Army (KNLA) Ysong Bey, along with two other associates, was arrested near Diphu railway station in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday.
Police on Wednesday said the arrests were made by a team of Diphu police, led by its senior officers, from a hideout near the Diphu railway station.
Police seized two foreign-made pistols of 7.6 caliber and three bullets from the arrested ultras, along with mobile phones and incriminating documents.
According to police, this group of ultras was involved in number of extortion and abduction.
Besides Bey, the other two arrested have been identified as Arjat Enghi and Tensing Ronghang. (UNI)
