SHILLONG: MPCC president DD Lapang has also come forward to defend Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma over alleged nexus with a Garo Hills-based rebel outfit saying these kind of things use to emerge during elections.

“In the last few days, the name of the Chief Minister has been unnecessarily dragged with the militant outfit,” Lapang said here on Thursday.

“Mere allegation without any substantial evidence has no weightage in the eye of law. The people are intelligent enough to read between the lines in what manner this whole issue has been blown out of proportion,” the MPCC president added.

Rimpu denies link : As the Opposition UDP moved the President on the issue of alleged nexus between ANVC-B and the Chief Minister , the rebel outfit’s chairman Rimpu Marak has denied having any link with the head of the government.

Talking to media persons on Thursday, Marak asked for proof to substantiate such allegation.

“If it can be proved it is ok. But I don’t think there is any ground and evidence because till now we are not in touch with the chief minister and for that matter we are not in contact with any political leader,” Marak said

When asked on the allegation that the ANVC-B had extended support to Dr Sangma during the last Assembly election, his reply was big no.

Hinting that the outfit might contest the upcoming GHADC elections, he said that the outfit would remain neutral and would have no political affiliation.
