District Council elections
SHILLONG: With doubts still persisting on the nature of model code of conduct to be followed in the upcoming district council elections, the district council affairs department will soon come up with clear cut directives in this regard.
At present only the members of district councils have come under the purview of the model code as the MLAs are exempted.
There is also a lack of clarity on whether the schemes of any MLA who is also an MDC can be launched once the district council elections are announced.
Moreover, the whole Government machinery has also not come under the model code ambit unlike during the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
The elections to both KHADC and JHADC will be held on February 24, while polls to GHADC will be held only after six months.
“We will have a discussion on the all aspects related to model code of conduct and we will issue proper directives to avoid confusion”, an official of the district council affairs department said.
Though the announcement of the district council elections was made recently, the model code of conduct is yet to become effective.
Government insists that only from February 5, the day of notification of the elections, that the model code of conduct will be made effective.
