Agartala: The left front opposition in Tripura has crticsed the left front for appointing Mayor of newly elevated Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) by an administrative order of a bureaucrat.
On 43rd statehood day, the Left Front government had elevated Agartala Municipal Council into AMC on Tuesday along with elevation of 10 other Nagar Panchayats to Municipal councils. By issuing an administrative order, the state government elevated the status of the former heads, triggereing the controversy.  All Congress councillors had boycotted the first council meeting of the Mayor in AMC on Friday alleging Mayor’s appointment was illegal as per the Act. Meanwhile, Tripura Progressive Gramin Congress and two other parties have announced to sit for 100 hours demonstration in the city protesting against the Mayor’s appointment from Sunday.
“As per the Act, Mayor has to be elected by the members of the corporation, instead the state government by an administrative order elevated Municipal Council Chairman Dr Prafullajit Sinha to Mayor, which is illegal and unconstitutional,” alleged Congress Spokesperson Dr Ashok Sinha. (UNI)
