Padma awards: State draws blank again

SHILLONG: No name from Meghalaya figured in this year’s list of Padma awardees which is normally released on the eve of Republic Day.

Several prominent personalities from the region namely P Kilemsungla (Nagaland), Mukul Chandra Goswami (Assam), Dr Waikhom Gojen Meeitei, Endira Devi, (Manipur), Chhakchhuak Chhuanvawra (Mizoram) found their names in the list which was declared on Saturday.

There are also no names from the State under the category of gallantry awards.

The last Padma Shri award went to state educationist Bertha G Dkhar for literature and education in 2010, and for the last three years, Meghalaya personalities did not get the recognition.

The State Government usually recommends the names for the consideration of the Centre and it is yet to be known whether the State Government recommended any names for the last three years to the Centre for its consideration.

Some of the personalities who ) received Padam Shri from the State in the past include, Silverine Swer, Theilin Phanbuh, Manas Chaudhuri, Patricia Mukhim and Dr Mrinal Miri.
