Irregular appointment: CBI carries out searches at Bokaro

New Delhi: CBI on Tuesday carried out searches at 35 locations in nine cities in connection with alleged irregularities in appointments of persons related to politicians and a retired judge in the Bokaro Steel Plant. CBI sources said two cases have been registered in Dhanbad naming former executive Jivesh Mishra and seven others as accused while in the second then General Manager A K Narula has been named as accused with 14 others. The case relates to alleged irregularities in the appointment process in the steel plant in which relatives of two high-profile politicians-a Rajya Sabha candidate and a former governor–and a retired judge were shown favours. The sources said searches are being carried out at 35-40 locations in nine cities including Ranchi, Bokaro, Patna, Ara, Bhubaneshwar, Bhopal, Delhi and Mumbai. They said a case has been registered under provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act and searches are going on. (PTI)

Businessman robbed of Rs six crore in Lajpat Nagar

New Delhi:  In a sensational daylight robbery, armed men robbed a businessman of more than Rs six crore at gunpoint in Lajpat Nagar area of South Delhi when he was on his way to deposit the money in a bank. Police said the robbery took place at around 9 AM near Lajpat Nagar Metro Station when the property dealer was on his way to Karol Bagh in a car to deposit cash in a bank. “The property dealer told us that he was carrying over Rs six crore in his car,” a police official said. When the property dealer reached a point near Lajpat Nagar Metro Station, the armed men, who were in a car, intercepted his vehicle, trained guns at him and asked him to alight from his car, police sources said. The robbers then fled from the scene in the property dealer’s car carrying the cash, leaving their vehicle at the spot. The victim then reached Lajpat Nagar Police station and reported the incident. Police found that the car which was abandoned by the robbers was a stolen one. Police is checking the CCTV footage of the area to identify the culprits. (PTI)

Two held from K’taka for theft of over 100 mobile handsets

Thane: Two youths were arrested from Karnataka for allegedly stealing mobile handsets from a godown in Bhiwandi area of Thane district, police said on Tuesday. Some unidentified persons had stolen nearly 147 mobile handsets worth about Rs 12 lakhs from the godown of Videocon mobile company at Vadpe village in Bhiwandi on December 28 last year, sub-inspector V S Shirsat of Bhiwandi taluka police station said. During its probe, the police team traced some of the IMEI numbers of the stolen mobiles to Tanda of Mundargi in Yadgir district of Karnataka. The Bhiwandi taluka police, with the help of their counterparts in Yadgir, reached the location and arrested the duo – Chandrakant Chavan and Mallu Rathod – on January 26 and seized 34 mobile phones from their possession. Police said the two accused, who are mobile phone dealers, admitted that they sold some handsets to other persons. They were brought to Thane yesterday and would be produced in a local court today for remand, police said. A hunt is on for the others involved in the crime, police added. (PTI)

6 killed, 2 injured as bus hits ambulance

Nagpur:  Six persons travelling in an ambulance were killed and two others seriously injured when a speeding bus hit their vehicle near here, police said on Tuesday. The mishap occurredon Monday night when the ambulance going from Bhusaval to Nagpur via Amravati collided with a private tourist bus coming from the opposite direction at Pachgaon intersection in Kondghali, about 60 kms from here, they said. The two seriously injured persons were rushed to Government Medical College hospital for treatment. The deceased include two women. The bus driver was arrested after the accident, police said, adding that a case has been registered in this connection. (PTI)
