SHILLONG: Sitting Rajya Sabha member Wansuk Syiem is all set for a second innings in the Upper House of Parliament as she is the only candidate who filed nomination for the February 7 biennial polls for the lone seat from Meghalaya.

“The formal announcement would be made on January 31, the last day of withdrawal of nomination,” Assembly Secretary H Mylliemngap said.

She also informed that the scrutiny of the nomination papers would take place on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the main opposition alliance Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF) has decided not to field any candidate to take on Syiem.

“We do not want to put any candidate against her as we believe in women empowerment,” United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Allantry F Dkhar said on Tuesday.
