SHILLONG: MPCC president DD Lapang has defended the party’s decision to nominate Lok Sabha MP from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Sanjay Singh, as Congress candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat from Assam.

“A member of the Congress is free to contest from any part of the country,” Lapang told newsmen here on Friday.

He said that even among the Gandhi family despite being a member of the Congress in Delhi, they contest their election from Rae Bareli and Amethi.

While citing an example of late Maham Sing Sawian, he said that late Sawian contested from Nongshken even though he is registered member of Mawkhar Block Congress.

“We are all aware there are candidates who are contesting from two constituencies even though they are registered voters only in one constituency,” Lapang said.
