TURA: Two militants who tried to make a quick buck for their organization by demanding ‘tax’ from a civilian ended up in a hospital with grievous injuries leading to the death of one of them in a botched extortion drive at Darengre village on the outskirts of Tura town on Saturday evening.

The incident took place at approximately 5 pm when the two Bangladeshi nationals working for the United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA) barged into the house of one Isak N Marak at Darengre village under Dobasipara police outpost on the outskirts of Tura town.

The deceased Sanjay Ch Sangma and Bijoy Ch Sangma were extorting money from their victim when villagers rushed in and caught both the ultras.

Both militants who were armed with small arms were given a sound thrashing by the public and handed over to police in a semi-unconscious state. They were taken to Tura civil hospital where one of them succumbed to his injuries late Saturday night.

Police recovered from their possession a 9 mm caliber automatic and a 7.65 pistol with two magazines and three live rounds of ammunition.

Bangla ultras were on wanted list

Meanwhile, the two militants who faced mob fury at Darengre village have been identified as wanted criminals from Bangladesh who were involved in a series of cases ranging from gun running, extortion to kidnappings.

Border Security Force sources reveal that one of the two injured militants hailed from a village just across the international border from Gasuapara.

Sanjay Ch Sangma hailed from Gobrakura village under Haluaghat police station in Mymensing district of Bangladesh. His home was just about 200 metres from the international border in neighbouring Bangladesh.

He had a history of criminal cases and was wanted for the kidnapping of Gasuapara coal exporter Jankin Marak who was abducted towards the fag end of last year from the Gasuapara border region. The victim was successfully rescued by the BSF from the border region.
