SHILLONG: In a sudden turn of events, MDP president and former legislator Martle N Mukhim has resigned from the party to contest the upcoming district council election from Mawkynrew constituency from the HSPDP.

The party sources revealed that it was a personal decision of Mukhim, founder president of the party, to leave MDP.

“The party is not dissolved. We would be meeting soon to appoint a new president,” party sources said adding that the party presently was being led by the vice president SB Nongdhar.

It may be mentioned that the MDP failed to win single seat in both the 2008 and 2013 Assembly election. Even in the 2009 district council election, the party drew blank.

HC dismisses writs on council polls : Meanwhile, Meghalaya High Court on Monday dismissed two writ petitions which had sought a stay on KHADC-JHADC elections.

The Division Bench comprising Chief Justice P C Pant and Justice SR Sen took up the writ petitions challenging the delimitation of constituencies and also passing of amended rules of 2013 regarding delimitation.

Interestingly, the petitioners, who are members of KHADC, also filed another petition on Monday challenging the legality of the rules on delimitation approved by the State Governor.

The High Court considered fit to take up the entire matter for disposal at this stage itself considering the request made by both the parties. During the hearing, the Counsel for KHADC, senior Advocate VGK Kynta argued that the district council has legislative competence to make or amend rules under the Assam Meghalaya Constitution of District Councils Rules 1951. The Division Bench was of the view that the writ petitions were not maintainable considering the fact that KHADC and JHADC were competent enough to amend rules and accordingly they were disposed off.
