AICC's N-E minority cell holds first meeting

Shillong: The first meeting of the North East Minority Department Coordination Committee of the AICC has decided to take up various pressing issues related to the minorities in the region on an expeditious manner, the new Coordinator Sayeedullah Nongrum said on Tuesday.

The meeting held at Umshyrpi College, Shillong, was attended by members of the department from all the North East states of India. MPCC president DD Lapang had inaugurated the AICC’s North East Minority Cell.

Lapang, in his inaugural speech, said that it is for the first time that the AICC has appointed a coordinator and joint coordinator from the region. He wished them all success in their endeavor to unite the minorities from all sections of the NE states.

Nongrum said that minority communities in the landlocked backward region face several socio-economic problems. “It will be the first priority of the committee to look into such problems and take remedial actions,” he added.

As the new co-coordinator, Nongrum will have to remain in touch with the party MPs and MLAs of the NE states to discuss various issues related to the minorities, Khurshid Ahmed Saiyed, chairman of the AICC’s minority department had said in a letter to the former legislator.

Ashma Begam from Assam has been appointed as the joint co-coordinator and will assist Nongrum.
