Williamnagar jail incident

SHILLONG: A year after the killing of two jail staff at Williamnagar, the relatives of late Warder Sarai Sing Thabah want a final word from the authorities on who did the crime as mystery still surrounds the attack.

Besides Thabah, the Assistant Jailor Neil Warjri was also killed in the attack by the criminals on February 2 night of 2013.

As promised, Government had provided the compensation of Rs 7. 5 lakh each to the family of the slain jail staff.

However, the relatives of late Thabah said on Wednesday that they wanted the authorities to find out who were behind the attack. The cell phone of late Thabah is yet to be handed over to the relatives.

Soon after the incident, police concluded that it was the handiwork of GNLA, but the statement was subsequently changed by the cops who asserted that it was carried out by a gang of ANVC-B cadres led by their self-styled commander-in-chief Senbirth Marak alias Norok.

Norok later formed the United A’chik Liberation Army (UALA).

However, the ANVC-B denied its involvement in the incident.

Even the magisterial inquiry report related to the incident did not pinpoint who was responsible for the attack and wanted police to investigate the matter further.

According to the findings of the magisterial probe, the targeted person was the assistant jailor and not the warder, who only happened to be a victim of circumstances.

“However, there is no conclusive proof of which group or individual members of militant outfit are responsible. The only possibility is that the investigation of the crime will unearth the identity of persons or outfit. Unquestionably there is no conspiracy involved in the incident,” the magisterial probe report said.
