NEW DELHI: Retired Assam bureaucrat and present member of the North Eastern Council (NEC), MP Bezbaruah, who has been named Chairman of the panel, set up by the Centre to suggest remedial measures to address concerns of the people of Northeast, on Thursday said he would try to listen to the voice of the affected people besides exploring the option of framing an anti-racial legislation.
Bezbaruah said the panel will have wide-ranging discussions with people from the region who have faced attacks in Delhi and other parts of the country, besides addressing ways to allay their concerns.
“I have an open mind. We will try to listen to the voice of the affected people and all those who are concerned over the problems being faced by the people of Northeast,” he told PTI over phone from Itanagar where he is attending a seminar.
The former Union Tourism Secretary said the Committee will deliberate and find ways to stop such attacks on the people from Northeast.
“Is there a need for such a legislation? Definitely there is. But the larger question is implementation on the ground,” he said, when asked whether the panel will suggest framing an anti-racial legislation. Bezbaruah said he had spent most of his life working for the people of the Northeast and would try his best to do whatever he could to reduce their suffering. (PTI)
