Meghalaya to host BSF-BGB IG-level meet on Feb 23

Agartala: To ensure effective border management, a four-day-long Inspectors General (IGs) level meeting between BSF and Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) will start at Dawki in Meghalaya on February 23 next, according to official sources here.

IGs of BSF’s four Northeast Frontiers – SK Srivastava (Guwahati), Anil Kumar (Meghalaya), BN Sharma (Tripura and Silchar) – will attend the biennial IG level meeting.

Besides, Sector Commanders of BSF will also participate in the important meeting.

On BGB part, Regional Commanders and Sector Commanders of South-East and Northeast Sector will join the meeting, said a top BSF official here on Friday.

Though the agenda of the meeting is yet to be finalized, border related issues, of course will come up for discussion.

On the BSF part, cross border movement of insurgents, existence of militant hideouts in Bangladesh and smuggling will be taken up.According to the latest intelligence inputs, around 22 militant hideouts still exist in Bangladesh. However, the Bangladesh security forces have taken proactive steps to flush out militants sheltered in its soil.

Besides, some strategic understanding might be adopted in the meeting. Sources indicate the BSF authority might pursue to get jailed ULFA leader Anup Chetia handed over to them. The Indian authority has been trying to get Chetia extradited since long time but so far could not achieve success.

It may be noted that an extradition treaty between two sides has already been inked paving the way for handing criminal to each other.
