‘Rising Sun’ resurfaces as poll symbol

NONGPOH: The ensuing district counil election has witnessed the resurrection of the election symbols of the erstwhile Hills People Union (HPU) political party, the Rising Sun, as out of the six candidates from five constituencies in Ri Bhoi District 3 were awarded with the symbol of the Rising Sun.

Notably, the merger of the erstwhile HPU and the People Demand Implementation Committee (PDIC) gave birth to the present UDP after the 1993 Assembly Election in the State.On Thursday, the Returning Officer for the MDC election, allotted the election symbol to the six independent candidates in which Albertus Lapang from Jirang Constituency was allotted with the candle symbol, James Sylliang and Otril Pamshong from Mawhati Constituency were allotted with the Rising Sun and Arrow respectively, Umsning constituency’s Carlus Kharkongngor with the ladder and Hilarus Marbaniang with the rising Sun and Umroi Constituency candidate, Micky Douglas Syiem with the Rising Sun symbol.
