SHILLONG: The Mawkyrwat market in South West Khasi Hills saw two political parties virtually struggle for space on Friday while campaigning for the KHADC elections.

A meeting called by the UDP was yet to conclude at 1:30 pm testing the patience of the Congress leaders who were to commence their meet at 12:30 pm as per the time given by the Deputy Commissioner.

While the Congressmen urged their electoral rivals to conclude the meet, the UDP sought more time.

Congress leaders Rowell Lyngdoh and John Kharshiing were present as Donkupar Roy and Paul Lyngdoh campaigned for the local UDP candidate.

Roy even went on to lambast the Congress for roping in leaders of regional parties while giving the example of John Kharshiing who was earlier with the UDP.

With Kharshiing, who has a support base in rural areas, campaigning for the Congress candidates, the regional parties are in jittery.

Going beyond the district council elections, the insiders in regional parties feel that in case the AICC nominates Kharshiing as MP candidate for Shillong seat due to his support base which cuts across party lines in addition to the Congress base, the regional parties will face difficulty during the Lok Sabha polls
