Omar Abdullah government accused of being anti-youth
Jammu: Opposition PDP, BJP and JKNPP on Sunday walked out of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly to protest against the use of pellet guns on protestors in Shopian and on the issue of regularisation of daily wagers in the state.
While PDP members staged walkout in protest against the use of pellet guns on public, BJP and JKNPP members walked out of the House for government not having a policy to regularise daily wagers and casual labourers.
PDP members, led by Mehbooba Mufti, stood up from their opposition benches and protested against the government over use of pellet guns on peaceful protestors in Kashmir valley in which some youth sustained eye injuries.
They criticised the government over the use of “harmful weapons on public” and sought a reply. “Two youth — Tariq Ahmed and Ghulam Mohidin — were injured after pellet guns were used on protestors in Shopian belt of south Kashmir during protests. They have suffered severe injuries in their eyes and doctors have to refer them to Amritsar for treatment,” Mufti said.
Accusing Omar Abdullah government of being anti-youth in last five-and-half years period, she said, 120 youth have been killed in the firings during 2010 unrest in Kashmir valley.
“Scores of youth have been injured due to use of pellet guns and chilly grenades during his period.” She demanded a ban on use of pellet guns and chilly grenades in Kashmir valley saying it was harmful for the people.
She also demanded compensation for the injured youth for their medical bills and treatment.
The protest continued for over half an hour after which PDP staged walkout from the House.
Similarly, BJP members led by its legislative party leader Ashok Khajuria and JKNPP, led by Harshdev Singh, protested against the failure of the government to regularise the daily wagers and casual labourers and demanded a policy for their regularisation. They also staged walkout from the House.
Later, speaking to the media, JKNPP member Harshdev Singh said that government has failed to regularise the daily wagers and casual workers who have been working with various departments for several years.
“It is shameful on the part of the government that some of these daily wagers had climbed over towers in the state power department to press for their demands of regularisation,” he said, adding government should immediately come out with a policy on the issue. (PTI)
