Agartala: The opposition Congress created a huge ruckus in the Tripura assembly Tuesday, alleging that the Left Front government has failed to check rising crimes against women as well as corruption in the state.
Congress lawmakers led by Leader of Opposition Sudip Roy Barman disrupted the proceedings and the customary address to the legislature by Governor Devanand Konwar on the opening day of the budget session.
After getting no response from Speaker Ramendra Chandra Debnath, all 10 Congress legislators walked out of the house.
The budget session of the Tripura assembly began Tuesday. Finance Minister Badal Chowdhury will Wednesday present the budget for 2014-15.
Fifteen minutes after the proceedings began and the governor began his address, Roy Barman asked the governor to stop reading his speech and to hear the Congress legislators instead.
When the governor ignored his request, the Congress legislators started shouting slogans and created a noisy scene before walking out of the house.
Roy Barman later told reporters that the Manik Sarkar government has completely failed to curb corruption and crimes against women.
When the house reassembled after the governor’s address, the opposition lawmakers again created pandemonium, demanding salary and allowances to state government employees at par with their central government counterparts.
The finance minister tried to pacify the agitated Congress members by saying that as soon as the government arranged the required funds, it would agree to the Congress’s demand.
The unsatisfied Congress leader walked out of the house again, blaming the state government for “depriving government employees of due salaries and allowances”. (IANS)
