Garo Hills peace process under threat: ANVC-B

SHILLONG: The ANVC-B has alleged that attempts are being made to mar the peace process in Garo Hills which has already witnessed bloodshed.
In a statement issued here on Tuesday, the ANVC-B said that Garo Hills is looked upon by some as an arena for politics and a desperate attempt is being made to underline Garo Hills as a disturbed area.
Stating that further deterioration of the situation in Garo Hills will only pave way for the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), the outfit called upon people to gear up to oppose the boisterous politics.
The role of the civil society is crucial in bringing peace in Garo Hills, the ANVC-B statement said.
“If Government is serious about tackling militancy in Garo Hills then instead of spending crores of rupees on forces, job avenues should be created for both the educated and uneducated youths of the State,” the outfit said.
The outfit also expressed doubt over the role of Achik Peace Volunteers Council (APVC) and source of the footage that was leaked to media where a GNLA cadre executed an unidentified victim mercilessly.
“It is an old footage similar to Taliban execution which is aimed to unleash fear and terror.
“Why was the footage leaked now when the GNLA is showing signs of coming for peace talks,” the outfit questioned.
The ANVC-B also added that if the GNLA is willing to join the peace talks, Government must process necessary steps at the earliest to bring them on board in the best interest of Garo hills.
