NONGSTOIN: Leaders of three NGOs- FKJGP (Maweit circle), WYWC (Maweit circle) and NLAYF along with sordar of 55 villages from eight polling stations organized a massive public meeting at Maweit on Monday calling for a boycott of the KHADC polls and the Lok Sabha polls alter in the year.
This decision was taken unanimously by thousands who gathered at the venue braving the rain.
The NGO leaders had recently submitted a memorandum to the PWD (Roads) in Shillong giving the department a month’s time to take necessary steps to repair the Nonsgtoin-Maweit road.
As no steps were initiated to this effect, the NGOs decided to meet the sordars to garner support for the proposed boycott of polls.
President of the WYWC Maweit circle, Ioanis Diengngan said, “The Nonsgtoin-Maweit road was constructed in 1964 by the then Assam government. We had asked the government to take measures to repair the road within a month, but our fervent appeals went to deaf ears. Hence, we have decided to boycott the upcoming KHADC and Lok Sabha polls.”
