Nabagram (West Bengal): Describing the Behrampore Military Station as an idea close to his heart, President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday said the facility is part of an initiative to enhance capability of defence forces to safeguard national security interests.
Laying the foundation stone of the Station here, he said, “It is a great privilege for me to be here today witnessing the first step towards Berhampore Military Station becoming a reality”. “Berhampore Military Station assumes importance as it is part of the initiative being undertaken to enhance the capability of our defence forces to safeguard national security interests,” Mukherjee said, describing it as an idea close to his heart.
The President had during his tenure as Defence Minister initiated the process for the military station in Nabagram. Mukherjee, who had represented Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency which comprises Nabigram and other neighbouring areas, said the Station will benefit people of surrounding areas with economic development and prosperity.
He complimented Defence Minister A K Antony, senior leadership of the Army and Ministry of Defence for their efforts in realising this project of national importance. The President also appreciated Government of West Bengal and the people of the area for their generous support for the project and “in particular for providing land”.
Pointing to the historical importance of the place, Mukherjee said Murshidabad was a happening place several centuries ago and was the major power centre during the 17th and 18th century during the time of Siraj-ud-Daulla.
he famous Battle of Plassey through which the British wrested the control of this area and thereafter, of this country was fought about 60 kms South from this place, the President said, stressing the importance of the area. Mukherjee praised the Eastern Command of Indian Army for maintaining an excellent bonding with the civilian administration and the populace.
The Berhampore Military Station will involve investment for construction of the cantonment and related infrastructure, which will create additional employment, boost local economy and benefit the local populace, he said. West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan, Army Chief General Bikram Singh and the President’s son Abhijit Mukherjee, who represents Jangipur constituency in Lok Sabha, were also present during the function.
The Station, which will be spread over 250 acre of land, will be completed be 2018. An amount of Rs 600 crore will be spent on its construction. (PTI)
