NRI held for smuggling gold worth Rs 80 lakh
Hyderabad: An NRI, who allegedly tried to smuggle 2.4 kg gold worth Rs 80 lakh, was arrested by Customs authorities at Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport at Shamshabad here. The Customs officials intercepted Mohammed Abdul Mateen, who arrived here Wednesday evening by a flight from Saudi Arabia via Muscat. After subjecting him to checking, it was found that he was carrying 2.4 kg yellow metal in the form of an ashtray which was gold electroplated with 98.5 per cent purity, Customs officials said. (PTI)
Notice issued against BSP MLA for entering forest with arms
Bijnore: A notice has been issued against BSP MLA Mohd Ghazi for wandering into the reserved forest here with arms aiming to kill a man-eater tigress, which had created panic in the area, a forest department official said. Divisional Forest Officer, Najibabad, had issued a notice to the Barhapur MLA on Wednesday asking him not to enter the forest with arms or shooting at any wild animal, otherwise it would take legal action against him, Chief Forest Warden of Bareilly, M P Singh, said on Thursday. A man-eater tigress had strayed into Barhapur area killing several people and animals in the past few weeks and created panic among the people. Earlier, as efforts by the forest department to catch the beast did not yield any results, Ghazi set out with a few villagers to search the tigress and shoot it down with his gun. But he could not continue his search, as he had to head to Lucknow for attending the UP Assembly. The Forest department has appointed five shooters for searching the man-eater tigress in as many sectors of Barhapur and Sahuwallah ranges. (PTI)
Three abducted girls of a family found dead in AP
Hyderabad: Three girls were allegedly abducted and later murdered by their uncle in Nizamabad district of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, police said. Accused Narender Reddy, aged around 35, lured the three girls Siri (9), Akshaya (7) and Khushi (5) with chocolates and snacks while they were playing near their relative’s house in Nizamabad town and took them in a car last night, they said based on a complaint lodged by the girl’s parents. The girls, all cousins, were then taken to bypass road on Nizamabad town outskirts where Narender allegedly poured petrol on them and set them ablaze, before fleeing from the scene, Nizamabad DSP S Anil Kumar said. “The half-burnt bodies were found near a college this morning and whether the girls were sedated before being killed will be known only after postmortem, the DSP said. When police checked the call data records of Narender they found that he had gone towards Basar and found the car near a bridge. However, Narender was not there even as one person called the Basar police informing them that he had seen a man resembling Narender sitting on the railing of the bridge, the senior police officer explained. “We are investigating whether he might have jumped from the bridge into the river. However, swimmers did not find any body so far,” Anil Kumar said. (PTI)
UP Assembly adjourned after paying condolences
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Assembly was today adjourned for the day after paying condolences to two legislators, who died in last two months. As soon as the House met, Speaker Mata Prasad Pandey read resolution to condole death of legislators Sayed Kasim Ali (78) and Deepak Kumar (48). Ali was legislator from Fatehpur, while Kumar represented Unnao. Leader of the House, Akhilesh Yadav, leader of opposition Swami Prasad Maurya, BJP leader Hukum Singh and Congress leader Anugrah Narain Singh in their separate addresses condoled the death of the legislators. After observing two minutes silence, the House was adjourned. (PTI)
