SHILLONG: The UDP on Thursday expressed surprise over Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma’s call to the party to provide evidence of his alleged nexus with militant groups.

“We would like to remind the Chief Minister that it was Ajaju Marak, political secretary of ANVC (B) who startled us with his revelation on his (Dr Sangma’s) nexus with the militant groups. We simply voiced the public concern and confusion arising out of the revelation. And as a matter of fact, to dispel the confusion,we had demanded for an independent probe,” UDP Secretary Allantry F Dkhar said in a statement issued here on Thursday.

He said that the Government should ask for an independent probe either by the CBI or NIA to put the matter to rest.

“The UDP is neither ANVC (B) or CBI or NIA to provide evidence about his (the Chief Minister’s) nexus with the militant group,” Dkhar said.

The UDP secretary said that it is not proper for a person occupying a high office in the State to attempt to throw the onus into another court especially when the glaring example of protecting another accused Minister is fresh in the minds of the public.

Dr Sangma had on Wednesday challenged the UDP to provide a proof of the allegation leveled against him by the party.
