From KSU to HNLC

Editor,

I remember writing a letter to the editor about the functioning of the various NGO’s and the premier students’ body in our State. They don’t make any impact on the society. I also mentioned that while recruiting anyone as a member or a representative of their organisations the leaders should go for quality instead of quantity. I was shocked to read the news report (ST Feb 21 2014) about how a vibrant youth and the vice president of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Frederick Kharmawphlang had openly declared that he has joined the banned outfit, HNLC. It is evident that in the years to come he would be following the footsteps of Julius Dorphang and contest the elections.

Education is a pre-requisite to enlightened thinking especially for those who are representing organisations proclaiming to be working for the people and the State. That our people get easily fooled by these mascots to the extent of voting for them is unbelievable. Christianity has brought education to our State and we owe a debt of gratitude to Rev.Thomas Jones from the Presbyterian community for giving birth to our Khasi alphabets, thereby gifting us with the script to write and record our oral histories. The Irish Brothers and Catholic Missionaries too have set up schools and colleges in our State. Hence if anyone claims to fight for our rights that person should explain to the public how he or she is doing so? Education is important for logical reasoning. One cannot just leave a student body and join a militant group and expect to receive our sympathies. These are all political ploys. Meghalaya used to be a peaceful and a disciplined state where all are welcome. If you have to fight for the ILP, do it but in a civilised manner and not by hurting the sentiments of the senior citizens who have been born here lived in this State for decades.

Once again I would like to remind the leaders of various NGO’s to kindly filter, educate and then select their representatives because as now some members of NGO’s have redefined the term, “A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss,” by jumping from one organisation to another.

Obsessed with enquiries!

Editor,

Why is the judiciary or NGOs bent on investigation, re-investigation and re-re investigation of the Fullmoon case. Full moon was a criminal, a terrorist with blood on his hands. Society does benefit when such elements are eliminated. The key word is “ELIMINATED ” not how. There cannot be a righteous, moral , satisfactory procedure in this country to do away with vermins – a country where killers are now sought to be freed by a state govt.(Tamil Nadu Vs Rajiv Killers) for political gains. That the Supreme Court had to step in is a different matter. Who does not wish that the mythical “vigilante” who acts outside the perimeters of law should exist to get rid of criminals, considering that the law often takes far too long to complete its task? The courts are choked with infructuous cases and it is time such time/resource wasting exercises are stone walled and such complainants are fined heavily.

Kashyap’s exit a welcome step

Editor,

Being a football fanatic the first thing I do when I get the papers is turn to the back pages (sports page). To my delight I saw the news that was long overdue. No disrespect to Mr Kashyap or Coach Cash-iap (as some locals call him due to the money spent by Rangdajied to bring players to help turn their fortunes but in vain) but right from the start I did think it was a bad decision by Rangdajied to bring him in. Having watched ONGC in the previous season it was clear that his philosophy of 19th century football was never going to work in a culture which teaches its kids that football should be played on the ground not the air. So the appointment of Coach Herring marks a welcome step as we finally have someone who understands the football culture in the state (much as Thangboi at Lajong) given that the new Gaffer has got a week before his next game I’m expecting Rangdajied to return to its first love i.e playing the “sexy one-touch passing football” that we love in these parts of the country.

Yours etc.,

Celestial Passah,
