Congress to name candidates soon
SHILLONG: Congress is likely to come out with the names of its candidates for the Shillong and Tura Lok Sabha seats within a week’s time, a party source in Shillong said on Saturday.
The Central Election Committee of the party would meet soon to decide on the names of Congress candidates, including those from Meghalaya.
The committee is chaired by Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The names of possible candidates from Meghalaya have already been discussed once in the committee.
While there is near consensus on the Tura seat where Congress is likely to nominate Daryl William Cheran Momin, grandson of the first chief minister of Meghalaya Captain W. A. Sangma, for the Shillong seat there are multiple aspirants, including sitting MP Vincent Pala, and Congress member Charles Pyngrope, John Kharshiing and Ronnie Lyngdoh.
Pala said the Congress president would make the final decision on the party candidate for Shillong. He was optimistic that the outcome ) of the district council elections which had gone in favour of regional parties in KHADC would not have any effect on the prospects of the Lok
Sabha polls. The district council polls were entirely different from assembly and Lok Sabha polls, he argued.
