Agartala: A six-year-old tribal girl was charred to death while nine other students were injured when their make-shift hostel caught fire at Narendranagar in North Tripura district, police said on Sunday.

The fire, which broke out due to short circuit on Saturday, engulfed the one-room hostel where 74 students huddled. “A fire, caused by electric short circuit, broke out in a private school hostel Saturday night at Damchara, 200 km from here,” a police spokesman told the media.

Local villagers could rescue all the students except the girl child, identified as Emjouly Malsum, who died on the spot.

Assistant Director of School Education of North Tripura district Barun Das said a Christian missionary group had obtained permission to run a primary school, but they admitted students up to class nine and had no permission to run the hostel. Police are investigating the incident. (Agencies)
