SHILLONG: The State Community and Rural Development Department is all set to promote the use of Biodigesters in the State than can go a long way in total sanitation campaign.

A biodigester is an anaerobic tank (oxygen-free), which digests organic material biologically. It is used to treat black water (human waste) on site, eliminating pathogens and malignant bacteria, so the treated water can be used for irrigation.

Speaking to The Shillong Times, Joint Secretary of C&RD, BDR Tiwari said that the scheme of the Government would promote the use of eco friendly toilets in the State.

It is learnt that the biodigester is being developed by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA)

According to Tiwari, Meghalaya will be the first State in the North East to execute the project on a pilot project basis even as he said that the Government would promote the use of biodigester in the construction of individual toilets or Government toilets under the Bharat Nirman Scheme.

Initially, the State Government wants to cover as many as 10,000 household toilets in the State with the biodigesters and it can be beneficial to environment.
