NONGPOH: The Umsning Block Congress Committee on Tuesday accused Umsning legislator and Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh of engaging in anti-party activities in the recently held District Council elections.
The UBCC members alleged that Dr. Lyngdoh had lent his support to Independent candidate Carlus Kharkongor instead of the party candidate Dipul Ryntathiang during the District Council elections.
Kharkongor, a former Congressman, had tendered his resignation from the party after he was denied ticket for the elections.
The allegations were leveled by UBCC member including Congress adviser RR Makdoh, party candidate from Umsning Dipul Ryntathiang and Umsning Mahila Congress Committee member Aidalin Syiemlieh, in a statement issued here on Tuesday.
The UBCC members, further, alleged that Dr. Lyngdoh has been engaged in anti-party activities since the time he joined the party.
During a meeting on Tuesday, the UBCC members urged the MPCC to take stern action against the Congress legislator, while alleging that his indifferent attitude towards the party was causing discord among the Congress members.
The UBCC members also informed that earlier when the Congress Parliamentary Party had unanimously voiced support for amendment of the delimitation bill that led to the creation of the new constituency of Umsning, Dr. Lyngdoh had demonstrated insubordination by walking out of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) session.
The UBCC members alleged that Dr. Lyngdoh had publicly declared Kharkongor as his candidate from the constituency and even directed the headmen and other influential people to ensure victory for the Independent candidate.
“He even threatened that those who do not vote for ‘his candidate’ would not be provided with MLA schemes,” the UBCC members alleged.
“During the campaign for the District Council elections, both Dr. Lyngdoh and Kharkongor misled the people saying that the Congress symbol had been changed from ‘Hand’ to ‘the ladder’ which was the symbol of the Independent candidate,” the UBCC members further alleged.
“Dr Lyngdoh had also announced that in the next Assembly election he will contest as an Independent,”  the UBCC members claimed.
The Congress leaders also said that the fact that Dr. Lyngdoh had abandoned the party was evident from his absence from the party meeting in Umsning which was attended by MPCC chief Dr. DD Lapang and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma along with other party higher ups.
