Shillong: Taking strong exception to the news item, “Home Dept. yet to take action,” (ST, March 6, 2013), the State DGP, PJP Hanaman has clarified that police officer TC Chacko does not enjoy patronage of any of the higher ups in the present Police set-up, especially in his dealings in the coal trade.

“There is no reason for me to find it difficult to act against Chacko if there were any written complaints against him. Incidentally, he has recently been transferred from a field posting to Police Headquarters,” Hanaman said adding that the magisterial inquiry against Chacko into the killing of late Washington Marak has not been shelved and is pending with the Government as Chacko has sought a change of the inquiry officer.

Regarding the charge about his family members being involved in business Hanaman said, “My wife’s brother-in-law and nephews have been engaged in business in Meghalaya for over three decades and had entered into the coal business even before I returned to Shillong from deputation and assumed charge as DGP of Meghalaya in July 2013.”

The DGP further remarked that attempts to join issues to tarnish his name were uncalled for and out of line.
