Tripura: LF, TMC announce list of candidates for LS polls

Agartala: The ruling Left Front and Trinamool Congress (TMC) have announced their party candidates for the two Lok Sabha constituencies in Tripura where elections would be held on April 7 and 12 respectively. Convener of the Left Front and sitting MP Khagen Das said, state Industries and Commerce Minister Jitendra Chowdhuri would contest from the Tripura (East) ST constituency and Shankar Prasad Dutta, former MLA, would contest from the Tripura (West) constituency. Both the candidates belonged to CPI-M, the dominant partner of the Left Front. Das said this decision was taken at the meeting of the Left Front committee held here on Wednesday. Both the candidates are new faces. “We have selected new faces because I am 76 and suffering from some old age problems and Bajuban Reang, MP from East Tripura constituency is also above 70 and is facing the same problem,” Das told reporters. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has announced that former Congress Minister and Chairman of the Tripura unit of TMC, Ratan Chakraborty would contest from Tripura West constituency and Bhriguram Reang, a former leader of opposition Congress would contest from Tripura East constituency. The opposition Congress and BJP are yet to announce their candidates for the fray. A total of 23,83,146 voters will exercise their franchise in the general elections from Tripura where elections for the two parliamentary seats will be held on April 7 and 12 respectively. Keeping in view the security arrangements, elections would be held on two days, CEO, A Jindal said. (PTI)

Speaker adjourns Arunachal Assembly sine die

Itanagar: The Budget Session of the 13th session of the fifth legislative assembly of Arunachal Pradesh was adjourned sine die by Assembly Speaker Wanglin Lowangdong, here on Thursday evening. The three-day session was started on Tuesday last, by Governor’s address, introduction for passing of seven important bills and presentation of the first four months vote-on-accounts for the 2014-15 financial year, by the Chief Minister, who himself holds the finance portfolios. The Speaker finally pronounced sin-e-die of the thirteenth session after passing the Bills, vote-on-accounts, discussion on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address and other usual businesses. BJP to field two professors for LS poll in Manipur

Imphal: Gangmumei Kamei and R K Ranjan, former professors of Manipur University, will be the BJP candidates in the coming Lok Sabha elections in the state, party sources said on Thursday. While Ranjan will contest from inner Manipur constituency (Valley districts), Kamei will be the candidate in the outer Manipur constituency (Hill districts). Polls in outer Manipur would be held on April 9 and inner Manipur on April 17. Sources in CPI said senior party leader and former veterinary minister M Nara would be the party candidate in inner Manipur parliamentary constituency. (PTI)

Police seize 500 litres of illicit liquor

Barpeta (Assam): Police on Thursday seized 500 litres of illicit liquor and arrested four persons in this connection. According to police officials, a tempo was carrying the liquor. Acting on a tip-off police detained the tempo and arrested the four persons at Isshapur Hati area under Barpeta police station, they added. (PTI)
