U-14 football tourney: Mylliem beat Pokseh; Nongumlong register win

SHILLONG: Mylliem easily got past Pohkseh, but Nongumlong were engaged in a tough battle with Laitlyngkot in the U-14 Football Tournament, organised by the Shillong Sports Association, at Polo Grounds on Friday. On the dusty Second Ground, Mylliem beat Pohkseh 5-1, scoring all five of their goals in the first half. Bapyntngenlang Kurkalang opened the scoring with two quick goals in the 10th and 11th minutes, with further contributions from his team mates Meshanboklang Khongrymmai (25th minute), Arkynstar Kharbuki (27th) and Mebankyrshan Lyngdoh (29th). Pohkseh came out fighting in the second session, but could only score one goal, through Mebankitdor War in the 34th minute. Meanwhile, on Third Ground, Nongumlong squeezed out a 1-0 victory over Laitlyngkot. Both sides were highly competitive but played the game in the right spirit and demonstrated a good level of emerging talent. Kyrphang Tepphanrang brought joy to Nongumlong by scoring early in the second half (32nd minute). There will be four matches on Saturday. Laitumkhrah will first take on Marbisu at 10:00am, with Shillong Lajong play Smit at 12 noon. Two hours later comes the Laitkor versus Mawklot match, while Umpling face Lumshyiap at 4:00pm.

BCCI U-19 tourney: Meghalaya win opening encounter

SHILLONG: Meghalaya won their opening league tie against Nagaland by 30 runs in the BCCI A&A Under-19 cricket tournament in Dhanbad on Friday. Batting first Meghalaya piled up a challenging score of 245 for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 50 overs with Pranay Dollu scoring a patient 65 runs followed by valuable contributions by Jitender Singh (49) and Rohit Thapa (35). M. Jamir claimed five wickets for Nagaland. In reply, Nagaland were all out for 215 in 47.2 overs. B. Nandy (41) top scored for the Nagaland side. VK Saini scalped four wickets and Pankaj Mandal three wickets for Meghalaya which will take on Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday.

Trials for women’s tournament

Trials for selection of Meghalaya Women’s team which will participate in the BCCI Tournament will begin on March 10th at 8 AM at Cricket Ground, Polo. All interested players are eligible to participate.

MeECL beat Meghlaya Secretariat in well fought match

SHILLONG: MeECL defeated Meghalaya Secretariat by two wickets in a well contested league match of the SCA Corporate-cum-Office League organised by the Shillong Cricket Association at the Cricket Ground, Polo on Friday. Electing to bat first, Meghalaya Secretariat was restricted to 118/9 in 20 overs. Wanlam Lyngwa scored 45 runs of 54 balls while Jona Wahlang grabbed four wickets for 18 runs of his four overs. In reply, MeECL managed to reach the target only in the 20th over (19.2 overs). The team batting second also lost eight wickets in the process. Sengrik Areng scored 29 runs of 27 balls while Mark A. Laloo retained figures of 4/24.

Wushu trials deferred

SHILLONG: The lower level Wushu district trials for selection to represent the State in the North East Games for East Khasi Hills District has been deferred to March 11. Savio Hall, Laitumkhrah will be the venue for the trials. The trials for Mawkyrwat will be held on March 8 while for Shangpung, Jaintia Hills the trials are scheduled for March 10. Participants can contact the president of the Meghalaya Wushu Association for further details.

Block level U-12 footy tournament

SHILLONG: Mawlangwir Sports Club ‘A’ drubbed Maharam Govt. S.School, Mawkyrwat 10-0 in the South West Khasi Hills Block Level U-12 football tournament for boys and girls for the Mawkyrwat Block which kicked-off at Saisnad playground in Mawlangwir on Friday. Four goals from Givenwarder Lyngdoh (22, 24, 37 & 42 min) and braces from Shanbor Franky Lyngdoh (15 & 50 min) and Allwin Richol Iawphniaw (26 & 30 min) set the tone for Mawlangwir Sports Club’s victory. In other matches, Umpohliew Jingtip UPS defeated Mawlangwir Sports Club ‘B’ 3-0, while Mawthynrew Sports Club beat Mawten Sports Club 4-2.
