SHILLONG: The National People’s Party will announce the name of the candidate for Tura on Monday after the meeting of the Central Executive Committee meeting in Delhi.
The NPP legislator James Sangma informed on Saturday that the announcement would be made on Monday in view of the urgency of the matter as the election date for Meghalaya seats including Tura is on April 9.
Though the NPP leadership is tightlipped over the choice of the party candidate for Tura, speculation is rife that NPP national president and former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A. Sangma, who has represented Tura as many as eight terms, may again contest the seat. However, a section of party leaders is still favouring his daughter sitting MP Agatha Sangma to seek mandate yet again from Tura. NPP has already extended support to the BJP- led NDA expecting setback for the Congress-led UPA at the Centre.
The Opposition Meghalaya People’s Front had earlier decided not to field any candidate in Tura so that there is a collective effort to defeat the Congress candidate.
