SHILLONG: A day after the AICC Central Election Committee announced the name of Daryl William Cheran Momin as the party candidate for the Tura Lok Sabha seat, Cabinet Minister Zenith Sangma, brother of Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma, on Sunday said he was still awaiting official communication from the AICC. Zenith said he is yet to receive any official intimation from the Congress High Command on his name figuring in the official list of the Congress candidates, despite MPCC chief DD Lapang announcing that the ticket had been awarded to Momin, grandson of Meghalaya’s first Chief Minister Captain Williamson Sangma.
Zenith even received congratulatory messages from party workers and well wishers after his name figured in the official list.
Asked about the official list, Zenith said, “I have not seen the official list with my name that was cleared by AICC and I am yet to receive any official intimation from the High Command in this regard.”
MPCC president DD Lapang and Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma had said in Delhi on Saturday night that it was due to typing mistake that Zenith’s name was mentioned in the official list.
However, mystery persists over the ‘change of name’ of the candidate since there were no mistakes in the names of 193 other candidates cleared by the AICC on the same day.
Zenith, however, said that he would abide by the party decision regarding the Tura seat.
“Being a true Congress leader, I will not fight for party ticket. I had applied for the ticket and it is upto the Congress High Command to decide the issue,” he said.
