TURA: East Garo Hills police intercepted an arms consignment that had been dispatched from Karbi Anglong for the banned GNLA and seized three automatic assault rifles from a sports utility vehicle in Williamnagar on Monday evening.
The white Tata Mobile Pick-Up truck which was ferrying the weapons was intercepted at Dengagre locality of Williamnagar shortly after it entered the town at around 5 PM following a tip off from police intelligence about possible movement of arms from neighbouring Assam to the Garo Hills.
The Assam registered vehicle (AS-09 C-7516) with two occupants was halted by a police team and frisked. On closer examination of the vehicle they found the three AK rifles along with magazines and ammunition neatly folded and concealed inside the side doors of the truck.
Alongside the three rifles were five magazine containers and 124 rounds of live ammunition (47 AK ammo and 77 Insas 5.56 calibre ammo).
The two couriers of the consignment-Jatin Marak and Mintu Das, both hailing from Karbi Anglong, were taken into custody and during interrogation revealed to police that the GNLA was to take over the weapons through a courier at Williamnagar itself from where it was to make its way into the outfit’s camps.
