SHILLONG: Former Chief Minister and Nongpoh legislator DD Lapang has urged the State Government to improve the functioning of the three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in the State.

“It is sad that the functioning of the ADCs has been stereotype in the past many years. I feel that the government should provide financial support to the district councils to allow them to invest in some new endeavour,” Lapang said while participating in the discussion on the Governor’s Address in the assembly on Wednesday.

He said that the district councils could think of making investments in hospitals and others which would help to generate revenue for their sustenance.

“By doing this, they can also provide employment opportunities for unemployed youth,” the former Chief Minister said.

Pointing out that the ADCs face problems due to untimely release of funds by the government, Lapang urged the State Government to ensure that funds are provided to the ADCs on time.

Echoing similar views, Sohra MLA Titosstarwell Chyne (UDP) said that the Government ) had not sanctioned any funds for developmental works taken up by the Council in the last five years.

“I am informed that the Government has also not released the share of royalties on various mineral resources which are meant for the Council,” Chyne said.
