SHILLONG: In its effort to create more impact in the lives of the street children, Reach Shillong Ministries has opened another Open Day Shelter for street children of Shillong at Nongmynsong, Dong Umkdait.

The Open Shelter will cater to all children in need of care and protection like street and working children, rag pickers, orphaned, deserted and particularly those without home and family ties, vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

The Open Day shelter was inaugurated and dedicated by Rev. R. Phanbuh, Pastor of Nongmynsong Presbyterian Church.

The shelter home, the second for the Ministry apart from the existing one at Iew Mawlong, will operate between 7 am and 5 pm. During the first half of the morning from 7 to 10 am, the centre would be utilized as a school for the underprivileged children, drop-outs and never-enrolled children.

Street children between the age group of 5-18 would be accommodated during the working hours and the Open Day shelter will also provide immediate and short term assistance and also serve as a place for the children to rest while engaging in meaningful activities that will enhance their wellbeing.

The shelter will offer basic health care facilities, counselling, non-formal education, recreation and personality development programmes for the street children.
