SHILLONG: Several traditional bodies have opposed the steep hike in power tariff in the State.

The Dorbar Shnong Riatsamthiah has expressed its discontentment over excessive billing by the MeECL and has petitioned the Assistant Executive Engineer of Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) on the matter.

The Dorbar Shnong said the sudden hike in tariff has put a lot of pressure on the resident of the locality, adding that the residents were in the dark as regards to the basis under which the MeECL readied the exaggerated bills.

The Dorbar Shnong adopted a resolution that residents of the locality will not pay their power dues until MePDCL clarified or justified the hike in power tariff.

Meanwhile, the Ka Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong has asked the MeECL to issue a public clarification explaining the reasons and logic behind the steep hike in the power tariff.
