Church leaders ask govt not to lift prohibition on liquor

Aizawl: Mizoram Kohhran Hruaitute Committee (MKHC), a conglomerate of leaders of 14 major churches in the state, on Friday urged the government not to lift prohibition on liquor. MKHC, headed by the Presbyterian Church Mizoram Synod Moderator Rev K Lalhmuchhuaka, urged the state government to continue with the enforcement of the dry law imposed in the state on February 20, 1997. “We found it regrettable that the state government had intentions to lift the prohibition while the MKHC was standing firm on its stance on liquor and prohibition,” the church leaders said. MKHC held that drinking is against the teachings of the Bible and lifting of prohibition would be disastrous for the people of Mizoram. They urged the state government to make the Mizoram Liquor Total Prohibition Act, 1955 more stringent and enforce it more strictly. (PTI)

Nagaland Women Commission to hold seminars on legal awareness

Kohima: The Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW), in collaboration with National Commission for Women, would be organizing one-day seminar on legal awareness on marriage, divorce and Inheritance and women and health sector with emphasis on HIV&AIDS in various district headquarters According to a release issued by NSCW on Friday said that the districts and sub-divisions are Tseminyu town hall on March 20 under Kohima district, in Kiphire district, Kiphire Hopongkyü memorial hall on March 26, in Phek district Meluri town hall on March 27 and Phek badminton stadium on March 28. The commission has requested Rengma, Sangtam, Pochury and Chakhesang apex leaders, mother associations, student unions and Village Council Committees to participate in the programme. (UNI)

Su-Kam makes its first solar installation in Tripura

New Delhi: Su-Kam Power Systems, a power back up solutions provider, has made its first solar installation at Agartala in Tripura. The off grid Solar PV (photovoltaic) plant has been installed in the Ujjayanta Market Complex in the city recently, Su-Kam said in a statement. The company was assigned to commission, install and maintain this solar project by Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) in Agartala. “As part of our solar plan this fiscal, we shall continue making solar power available to both the residentialas well as commercial sector in North East India,” Ashish Sethi, Vice President, Solar Business, Su-Kam said in a statement. Nagaland Congress kick starts poll campaign from Mokokchung

Kohima:  The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee kick started its Lok Sabha election campaign in Mokokchung district on Thursday at Onpankong Salang in Mokokchung town. According to a party release today, the campaign was attended by Congress Campaign Committee Convener I. Imkong and the sitting MLAs of the district along with Mokokchung District Committee members. The meeting was addressed by I Imkong and MLAs C Apok Jamir and O. Imti Longkumer, with dedicated support for K V Pusa, the party’s candidate for the ensuing Parliamentary election 2014. The welcome address was delivered by S Tia Longkumer, President of the Mokokchung District Congress Committee. (UNI)

Train services disrupted in Kamrup district

Rangiya (Assam): Train services were disrupted on Friday after agitated locals blocked the railway tracks following a mishap at an unmanned railway crossing at Boko in Assam’s Kamrup (Rural) district, officials said. The DN Chilarai Express hit a car at the Bondapara unmanned level crossing but there was no casualty as the driver of the car had jumped out of the vehicle. Locals stopped the train and squatted on the railway tracks demanding a manned level crossing as similar incidents had occurred on the same spot earlier. Train services along the route were disrupted. Senior police and railway officials have rushed to the spot to persuade the agitators to lift the blockade. (PTI)

Cong names candidate for Hrangturzo assembly seat

Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Friday announced that Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu, President of the Mizoram Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) would be its official nominee for the by-election to the Hrangturzo assembly seat to be held on April nine. By-election to the Hrangturzo assembly constituency was necessitated as Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla vacated the seat. La Thanhawla had won from two seats in the state assembly polls held on November 25 last. He retained the Serchhip seat, his home turf. If elected, Vanlalawmpuii would become the first Mizo woman to be elected to the Mizoram Assembly after a lapse of 27 years. A Master degree in Political Science and daughter of former Minister C Chawngkuna, Chawngthu has been actively involved in politics for eight years and was mainly in the youth activities. Earlier, the AICC had announced on Saturday last that C L Ruala, the sitting MP would again contest the election to the lone Mizoram Lok Sabha seat to be held simultaneously on April nine. (PTI)

The award was given by the Ho’ble Governor of Odisha Dr. S C Jamir on  March 7  in a glittering function on the occasion of Official Language conference for East and North East Region held at Bhubaneswar.
