Maweit NGOs decide to boycott LS elections

NONGSTOIN: The 3 NGOs of Maweit area consisting of Western Youth Welfare Council (WYWC), Nongtre Lyngngam Achik Youth Federation (NLAYF) and Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Maweit circle, have decided to boycott the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in protest against the government’s failure to improve the road connecting the village to the district headquarters at Nongstoin covering only 35km.
Maweit has eight polling stations which include Risiang, Mynraw, Nongtraw, Maweit, Mawmarin, Miangshang, Nongshyrkon and Porkhadoh.
The decision was taken in an executive meeting held at Risiang on Saturday.
The president of WYWC Maweit Circle, A Diengan said, “For 50 years, people have suffered because of the road’s poor condition. We demand an improvement and black topping, but the government ignored us.”
It may be mentioned that in the MDC election held recently, the three NGOs boycotted the election in Shyrkon Polling station and only 8 persons came to cast their votes.
