SHILLONG: A spurt in militancy in Garo Hills, unrest over the demand to implement ILP and education scam, among others, haunt the Congress-led Meghalaya United Alliance Government-II as it completes a year in office.
Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma was sworn in on March 5 last year, 11 cabinet ministers took oath on March 11.
Promises were a plenty when the Chief Minister and his cabinet team assumed office a year ago with an assurance that the Government was committed to eradicate corruption at all levels, besides ensuring peace and development.
Now there is also an undue delay on solving border problem with Assam despite the State Government handing over documentary proof to the neighbouring state to establish the claim of Meghalaya over certain areas.
The Opposition recently criticized the Government for not taking action against Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who is embroiled in the education scam.
Neither is the Chief Minister ready for a probe into his own alleged nexus with ANVC, as revealed by the militants themselves.
The much hyped Food Security Act is still a non-starter in Meghalaya as the Government is yet to finalist the beneficiaries.
The Government is dragging its feet on setting up of a strong Lokayukta as the Government resorted to several amendments in the past. The amended Lokayukta Bill was tabled again during the current session of the assembly.
The delayed response on the part of the Government on the agitations over implementation of ILP has resulted in many student leaders joining HNLC.
The peace pact with ANVC-ANVC-B factions is in a limbo even as assurances were made by the Government that the final settlement will be soon realized.
Though the Government is keen to hold talks with GNLA, many splinter groups in the Garo Hills have become a cause of concern.
