Mahela to quit T20Is after WC as one of most successful batter
Dhaka: Sri Lankan stalwart Mahela Jayawardene on Monday announced his retirement from Twenty20 International cricket after the conclusion of the ongoing ICC World T20 in Bangladesh, a format in which he flourished as one of the most successful batsmen. Jayawardene made the announcement through the ICC’s Twitter Mirror campaign, in which players have been posting photographic messages directly to their fans through the social networking website. “SL legend @MahelaJay to join @KumarSanga2 in T20I retirement after the #wt20 2014,” the ICC said in a tweet posted along with a signed photo of both Sangakkara and Jayawardene posing together with a message at the background, saying ‘Last World T20. Let’s make it count’. The decision came a day after another Sri Lankan veteran Kumar Sangakkara announced retirement from the shortest format in the international circuit after the ICC World T20. The 36-year-old Jayawardene, who has appeared in all four T20 World Cups till date, will quit the shortest format as one of the all-time top batsmen. With 1335 runs from 49 T20I matches at an average of 31.78 and with a strike rate of 134.17, Jayawardene is currently the highest Sri Lankan run getter in T20Is and second overall behind Brendon McCullum (1959 from 64 matches) of New Zealand. He was the captain of Sri Lankan team which lost in the final of the last ICC World T20 at home against the West Indies. (PTI)
2015 will be my last WC: Sanga
Dhaka: Having announced his retirement from T20 internationals, Kumar Sangakkara on Monday said that he would like to call time on his ODI career after the 2015 ICC World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The veteran Sri Lankan batsman termed it a “natural progression”. “As far as ODI and Test cricket are concerned, it’s hard to make a time frame. I am 36 years old now and will be 37 next year during the time of World Cup. By next World Cup, I will be 41 and I don’t hope that I am playing then. So 2015 World Cup will be my last. It’s a a kind of natural progression,” Sangakkara said during an interaction during the open session of Sri Lankan team today. “For Test cricket, form, fitness and enjoyment factors are there for you to continue. There is no denying I am in the twilight of my career,” he said. With Mahela Jayawardene also announcing his retirement from T20 Internationals, the transition phase in Lankan cricket is about to start just like it happened in India a few years back. But Sangakkara felt that Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal are two players who will carry the Sanga-Mahela legacy. “I think it’s going to be fine. If you look at Thirimanne and Chandimal, they are ready to play in any form of cricket. I think that if me and Mahela decide to quit today, tomorrow or whenever we do, it’s not going to make a huge difference. “Angelo Mathews is maturing as the Test and ODI captain. Dinesh is also a young captain. Sri Lankan cricket is in very good hands,” said the man who has played 122 Tests, 369 ODIs besides 50 T20 Internationals. (PTI)
Vaughan feels ‘conned’ by Trott exit
