SHILLONG: GNC legislator Clifford R Marak from Chokpot has expressed concern over the failure of the police department to provide security to a woman who has received a life threat from the GNLA.
“I would like to know who will be held responsible if anything happens to this woman,” Marak asked while moving a call attention motion on a recent news item appearing in The Shillong Times under the caption “Brave woman takes on GNLA, gets life threat” in the Assembly on Tuesday.
He asserted that the Government should consider providing security to the woman since she had bravely taken on a GNLA militant who had demanded money from her.
“I am also amazed at the lack of promptness on the part of the police to assist the woman even after she called the West Garo Hills SP Mukesh Kr. Singh to send some police personnel to arrest the militant,” Marak observed.
In her reply, Home Minister Roshan Warjri said that the police have taken cognizance of this life threat to the woman by the GNLA.
“We have tried to get an inside into this case,” Warjri said, while assuring all possible assistance to the woman from the side of the police.
She also informed that they had verified the mobile number from which the GNLA cadre had called the woman to demand money. As per the information, the Home Minister said that the number belonged to one Jobbar Ali of Makribari, Krishnai. On verification, however, the Krishnai Police found that the subscriber was non-existent.
Police say that GNLA use these un-verified SIM cards to indulge in extortions, kidnappings and other criminal activities.
