Assam, M’laya CEOs to meet on April

SHILLONG: A meeting between the chief electoral officers of Meghalaya and Assam has been scheduled in Shillong for April 1 to discuss better co-ordination in conducting elections in polling stations along theAssam-Meghalaya border.

There are as many as 138 polling stations in 102 locations across Assam-Meghalaya border.

While the first phase of Lok Sabha polls in Assam is on April 7, the single phase of polls in Meghalaya is on April 9.

The Chief Electoral Officer P Naik told reporters on Friday that several issues including movement of security personnel and polling parties along the border areas will be discussed during the meeting.

The issue of dual voters may also figure in the meeting as several such cases were reported under the Tura Lokha Sabha constituency.

Naik said an FIR in this regard has already been lodged by the returning officer against the people who have two EPICs, one from Meghalaya and the other from Assam.

Force deployment

As many as 40 companies of central paramilitary forces will be deployed for the conduct of polls, Naik said.

The State Government had sought as many as 79 companies of central paramilitary forces for the smooth conduct of polls from the Centre, but the Government was allotted only 40 companies of paramilitary forces which also include CRPF, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) among others.
