SHILLONG: An Assam Regiment Centre (ARC) havildar was arrested on Friday for damaging an ATM near Military Hospital here. The acused  Pranab Kumar Ray (38) of Assam Regiment Glacier Unit,  was forwarded to judicial custody for three days from Saturday. According to police, it was on February 28 that the police received a complaint from  D. Guru Raja Rao, assistant general manager SBI that on February 26 some persons broke the ATM near the Military Hospital.
Police collected evidence from the SBI administrative branch, Bawri Mansion after checking the CCTV footage.
Later, an official of the Assam Regiment identified the accused and an intimation was sent to the Commanding Officer 101 area and subsequently, he was arrested on Friday from Madanriting.
Sources close to the Assam Regiment said that the havildar was not mentally stable which resulted in the vandalism of ATM.
However, reliable sources said that the havildar did not get salary for a few months which infuriated him to target the ATM after he constantly checked the balance in his account.
