SHILLONG: The NPP candidate for Tura seat Purno A Sangma on Tuesday offered to spearhead the movement for a separate Garoland if the people of Garo Hills wanted him to do so.
Addressing an election rally at Resubelpara, North Garo Hills, which is the home constituency of Chairman of State Planning Board SC Marak, Sangma also made an appeal to all the militant groups to give up arms and join the mainstream to work for the formation a separate state for Garos.
“If the people wanted me to take the lead, I am willing to spearhead the movement for a separate state”, the former Lok Sabha Speaker said.
Dwelling on the root cause of unrest in Garo Hills, which according to him is the demand for a separate Garoland, Sangma appealed to all insurgent groups to join the mainstream after giving up arms for a joint imitative to work for the formation of a separate Garoland.
He also urged people to support NPP if they wanted to have their dream of having a separate Garo state fulfilled
The public meeting was attended by South Tura legislator, John Leslee Sangma, Gambegre legislator Saleng Sangma and former Minister CB Marak among others.
