SHILLONG: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state coordinator Amos Kharshiing has written to the State Chief Electoral Officer alleging that he had information that in the previous elections voters in remote areas of East Jaintia Hills had not been given any access to the EVMs as the whole casting of votes in these areas were done by a few with the knowledge of the Polling Officers.

Kharshiing claimed that the villagers had been deprived of their Fundamental Right to vote.

He alleged that the villages where people were not given access to EVMs include – Hingaria, Huroi, Leijri, Baskuna, Borsara and also parts of Rymbai in East Jaintia Hills District, mostly falling under the Sutnga-Saipung Constituency and Khliehriat Assembly Constituency and Muktapur, Pasadwar and Amsku in West Jaintia Hills District.

He also claimed that the polling stations where such illegal practices were being followed are – Hingaria, Huroi and Leijri covering areas like Baskuna and Lahalein – as most of these areas are remote and neglected.

“I have also been informed that “dead people” also cast their votes in many remote areas of Jaintia Hills and the police posted at the polling stations were allowed to extort openly,” he said.

Kharshiing urge the CEO to ensure that video recordings are done at the said polling stations during the voting period and the police personnel who have served longer than their tenure of posting should immediately be transferred and new teams should be deployed there.
