NE MPs: Sikkim MP participated in most debates, best attendance by Manipur

Guwahati: Among the 25 MPs from the eight North Eastern states, Sikkim Lok Sabha Member Prem Das Rai had participated in maximum number of debates in the outgoing Lok Sabha.

According to a study by the PRS Legislative Research data, the SDF MP had participated in as many as 70 debates in the Parliament. The national average is 37.

BJP MP from Mangaldai in Assam Ramen Deka comes second with 62 debate participation, followed by Inner Manipur Congress MP Thokchom Meinya with 55, according to the data.

AIUDF MP from Dhubri Badruddin Ajmal has the best record of questions asked. He has asked 320 questions.

Tripura MP Khagen Das has asked 310 questions, followed by Thokchom Meinya (204) and PD Rai (180).

The national average on number of questions asked per MP is 300.

On attendance percentage, the MPs from Manipur score the highest.

Thangso Baite and Thokchom Meinya, both Congress MPs, have attendance percentage of 98 and 99 percent respectively.

The national average stands at 76 percent.

NCP MP from Tura Agatha Sangma, also a former minister, has cut a sorry figure by asking no questions and participating in no debate.

She also has a low attendance of 49 per cent.

Bijoya Chakravarty of the BJP, an MP from Assam, has introduced the maximum number of private member’s bills at four, while the national average for introduction of private member bills is 0.8.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s brother Deep Gogoi, who is an MP from Kaliabor, has also participated in no debate nor asked any questions, so did Barpeta Congress MP Ismail Hussain.

The eight NE states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura have 25 Lok Sabha constituencies between them. (UNI)
