Editor,

The beautification of Laitumkhrah point taken up by the authorities is indeed a welcome move. This has attracted many especially with the new vehicular traffic arrangement. Through your esteemed daily I would like to suggest to the authorities to erect a bust of U Soso Tham within the Rotary since Laitumkhrah is the seat of many educational institutions. Portraying the bust of U Myllung Soso Tham would remind every passer-by of the contributions made by him to Khasi Literature and Education.

Of religion and politics

Editor,

On the subject above being a Christian (Catholic)I do not see any wrong in Rev PBM Basaiawmoit opting to join politics and and contesting the upcoming MP elections. A citizen of India, even if he is a church leader has every right to contest elections. I recall that during the recent agitations by various NGOs with regards to ILP, many have challenged and questioned the role of various Church Bodies for not doing enough to engage with the issue or as peace makers. Now that we have a prominent Church elder who wants to fight for the elections with hopes of bringing in change to the State, he is being slammed instead. Meghalaya needs transformative leadership to take it to the next level of economic growth. So why blame the Church bodies and their representatives during times of agitation while at the same time disallowing and discouraging them from contesting elections? If a senior student leader can join a banned outfit and go underground why cannot a church leader join politics? We do need good politics with good representatives. It’s time we explore new possibilities for a brighter and enlightening vision for Meghalaya and its people rather than sit back and do the usual moaning and complaining.

LPG distribution

Editor,

Through your esteemed newspaper I wish to draw the attention of concerned authorities on the difficulties faced by LPG consumers regarding home delivery of LPG Cylinders. The Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills had earlier issued a directive to all gas agencies of the city for home delivery of LPG cylinders. However, the labourers engaged by the gas agencies often refuse to make home delivery of cylinders and ask for tips etc., even though the amount is already loaded to the cost of a refilled cylinder. This is a common practice followed by the labourers of the gas agencies in most localities of the city. When asked why the labourers are refusing to deliver cylinders at our doorsteps the distribution crew says that if the labourers refuse to carry the cylinders they can’t do anything. Under the circumstances the helpless consumers have no option but to carry the cylinder themselves. It is also observed that most of the LPG Cylinders distributed are leaked ones and are repaired by the labourers using pliers and other tools without proper supervision. When a consumer requests exchange of the leaked LPG Cylinder the labourers refuse to do so and tell the consumer to go to the agency’s office and get the leaked cylinder verified after which an alternative cylinder will have to be collected from the warehouse of the gas agency, located in the outskirts of the city. I request the concerned authorities to look into this matter and direct the gas agencies to replace a leaked cylinder immediately without going into the bizarre and problematic procedure of cylinder verifications etc. being followed at the moment. Hope this problem is resolved by the Deputy Commissioner (Supply).

Good show Bah Pala

Editor,

Thank you for the detailed account of the Shillong’ s M P performance in parliament. Bah Pala must be congratulated for the sincere attendance he has recorded and for the questions and debates he has participated in. If re-elected we hope he would perform even better. To say that he does not have his own manifesto and that the central manifesto would be followed is, however, not acceptable according to the little understanding I have on such matters. I feel Bah Pala should structure his own manifesto to meet the needs of the constituency he represents without sidelining the aims and objectives of the Party he represents. Bah Pala is also known as a shrewd business man. Let’s hope he applies his shrewdness in leading the people he represents towards civilization, prosperity, and a feeling of brotherhood among the different tribes and sub-tribes, clan and sub-clans he represents through the various schemes we hope he would introduce should he get a second term. The benefits should be enjoyed by every citizen and not be monopolized by the few chosen ones.

Yours etc.,
